Nissan ‘ Design in Motion’

Nissan asked Unit9 and I to reimagine how a car can tell a story. Our answer was to use the car itself as the animation tool by combining traditional Zoetrope techniques with precise modern technology. By using the precision speed control of new Nissan Ariya combined with a flash gun and 450 meters of printed canvas animation frames we created a one of a kind story.

Shot all in camera in a single evening in Madrid, the project required some custom technological development. We turned to Justin Pentacost from Portable Motion Control who created a custom flash triggering system that fired the on-car camera and flash at 5 frames p/s. This illuminated a single 2.5M wide cell frame on an interval when traveling at 56km/h. When played back at 25fps this creates the in camera effect of animation akin to early forms of zoetrope techniques.
